🏛️ History & Heritage

The historical paths of Chempu Grama Panchayat where rich heritage and social progress converge

📜 History of Chempu

Most of the land in this village belonged to Devaswoms (temple trusts). During the reign of King Marthanda Varma over Travancore, Prime Minister Ramayyan Dalawa established the Illikkotta fort at Brahmamangalam, which was the headquarters of Vallikkunnu. This fort was built to protect the borders and ensure the security of Travancore.

With the transfer of Devaswom properties to local chieftains, landlords emerged. Feudalism and untouchability prevailed in this region. It is said that the name Chempu originated from the word "Chamba", referring to fish, which was available in abundance in this area. There is also an opinion that the name derived from "Chemboo", meaning land with red soil.

🕊️ Impact of Vaikom Satyagraha

Like in other parts of Kerala, the severity of the caste system existed here as well. It was against this social injustice that the Vaikom Satyagraha was held in 1924. Supported by national leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, this movement paved the way for significant social transformations in the Chempu area.

The ripples of the renaissance that occurred in Kerala during the post-independence era also reached Chempu. Through progress in social, cultural, and educational fields, the panchayat advanced into new phases of development.
