📍 Location
Chempu Grama Panchayat is a coastal Grama Panchayat located in Vaikom Taluk of Kottayam District. The presence of Vembanad Lake and Muvattupuzha River makes the topography of this panchayat unique. Being water-rich, this region forms a major part of Kerala's traditional backwater-river ecosystem.
💧 Water Resources
Vembanad Lake lies on the western boundary of Chempu Grama Panchayat, while the Muvattupuzha River flows along its northern parts. Small canals, tributaries, and water bodies flowing through various parts of the panchayat serve as natural water sources. This abundance of water provides great support to the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
🌾 Topography
The topography of the panchayat is predominantly plain. The geographical structure of the area is formed by a combination of low-lying lands, lake shores, paddy fields, and drylands. Natural conditions suitable for paddy cultivation, coconut farming, and fishing prevail here.
🛣️ Transportation
The Vaikom–Ernakulam State Highway passes to the east of Chempu Grama Panchayat. It serves as the main transportation route and a key driver of economic development for the panchayat. Chempu is an area where both water transport and land transport hold equal importance.

The panchayat experiences a tropical monsoon climate. Due to receiving both the South-West and North-East monsoons, adequate rainfall is received throughout the year. However, waterlogging, coastal erosion, and mosquito-borne diseases often pose challenges during the rainy season.
